I have a bottle of red wine, screw cap sealed, that was opened about a year ago. Is it still good?
l found this bottle of some brand of concord grape wine in the cabinet. l
remember it must have been a year or a year and a half... maybe more...
since it was first opened. It is, however, still sealed with the screw-on
bottle cap... and l know it was a pretty good seal, because when l opened
it earlier today l heard a small *whisp* of air. So is wine that old still
any good? And more importantly, is it safe to drink? o_O Thanks.
It willnotbe good. It will be oxidised.
It wasn't an expenisve wine, pour it away and buy a new bottle.
At worst it is turned to vinegar. Taste it, it will be safe
since no harmful bacteria can survive at those alcohol levels. If it
tastes like vinegar, just use it for salad dressing. I save my unused
wine and make vinegar out of it. It has more character than most
commercial stuff.
There is nothing wrong with a screw cap for wine, but after
opening a bottle, no matter what the cork type, it will be bad after a few
days, or a week or so if you use a vacuum sealer.
It is safe to take a sip and see how it is. But, it is likely
not going to taste very good.
I thought the more whine ages the better it is? I am not sure
about it though because of the screw on bottle cap part..
Typically, even a resealed wine will have noticibly oxidised
within the week once the cap is opened. Leave it long enough, and it will
turn to vinegar. I am not sure how the higher sugar content of concord
grapes will affect this process, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.
Pour a little and see!
It is probably safe to drink, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Wine is alcoholic enough kill most microbes that might want to live inside.
No, I suspect it will have turned by now. Wine starts going
bad the moment you open it because it will have been exposed to the air.
I will drink a glass of red from an open bottle for a few days but it gets
worse each day thereafter. White might last a week in the refrigerator
but goes bad fairly quickly as well.
It won't be unsafe to drink because of the alcohol content. More likely it will have turned to acetic acid (vinegar)
If its a cork bottle it should be. Wine is made i of berries
and grapes that doesnt turn bad.. Good Luck
